Description: Dr. Ruta Bloomfield will present a historic performance of harpsichord music on February 19, 2009. She will premiere previously inaccessible music of Bernard de Bury, the king’s harpsichordist at Versailles in the 18th Century. Dr. Bloomfield recently produced a modern edition of De Bury’s music for her doctoral work in historical performance practices at Claremont Graduate University. The original work survived only in the form of its ca. 1736 publication. Complicated notation conventions, like the use of eight clefs which changed frequently, made it extremely difficult to read. This collection of four suites, written when De Bury was fifteen years old, represents his only compositions for harpsichord. His later works were for the theater. Dr. Bloomfield will perform the suites on her William Dowd French double harpsichord based on a mid-18th-century model by Paul Taskin.
