10 Natural Treatments for Hair Loss [2018 Edition]

Take Me To Post Comment Form

Most people want a full head of hair that glimmers with health and vitality. Unfortunately, for those of us that suffer from hair loss, this beautiful supermodel hair is just a dream. However, it doesn’t have to be that way!

The average person has 100,000 hairs on their head and loses between 50-100 of these every day. When you lose more than that, you will notice that your hair looks thin and lackluster, but the good news is that this problem can be reversed relatively easily in most cases.

You can take an active role in helping your hair to recover, regrow, and look its best. Here are some of the best natural hair loss treatments that you can explore at home.

Massage Your Hair

One of the first things you can do when you begin to notice that you are losing your hair is enjoy a head massage. You can either administer this yourself or lay back and relax whilst someone else massages your head and hair for you.

Massaging your head will increase blood flow to your scalp and your hair follicles, helping to promote both growth and health. It will also encourage you to relax and lower your stress levels, which is known to be a leading cause of hair loss.

Simply massage your hair with your fingertips using a light amount of pressure. Apply a fragrant oil (such as coconut or almond oil) to the roots of your hair to enhance the massage experience.

Apply Onion Juice

It might sound odd (and it certainly won’t make your hair smell wonderful) but new research has found that applying onion juice to the hair can help to promote hair growth. A study published in the Journal of Dermatology found that 74% percent of participants who applied onion juice directly to their hair experienced significant hair regrowth.

So what should you do? Extract the juice from an onion and then cover your hair with it, paying particular attention to the roots. Leave the solution on your hair for around half an hour, then rinse it out. Finish by shampooing your hair to remove the less than pleasant smell!

Apply Aloe Vera

Another tried and tested natural treatment for hair loss is the use of Aloe Vera. Aloe vera has long been hailed for its skin soothing and healing properties, and it can have a very similar impact on your hair.

Aloe vera will reduce any redness or inflammation of the scalp, and will also help to add strength to brittle and broken hair. You can use either aloe vera juice or gel, depending on your preference: apply it directly to your scalp, leave it on your hair to soak and set (between 3-4 hours is optimal) and then rinse. If you can find the time, try to repeat this process up to 4 times a week to see fast results.

Increase your Iron Consumption

Many women who are experiencing hair loss are also deficient in iron, and research has shown that the two are connected. Not consuming enough iron in your diet can contribute to the development of female pattern baldness. Not have enough iron in your body reduces your red blood count, which can affect the quality of the blood flow to your scalp and hair.

If you are vegetarian or vegan then you may find it difficult to intake enough iron through diet alone, no matter what changes you make. If this is the case then simply add an iron supplement to your daily routine; iron is often contained in vitamins designed specifically to control and reverse hair loss.

Moisturise with Coconut Milk

It should come as no surprise that coconut milk is good for the condition of your hair; after all, there are a huge number of coconut fragranced shampoos and conditioners on the market. Coconut has potent moisturizing properties that make it ideal for restoring softness and flexibility to damaged and brittle hair.

Having a dry scalp is one of the leading causes of hair loss, so using coconut milk to reverse this problem could well help to restore your mane to its former glory. It should reverse any damage, improve the condition of your follicles, and help your hair return to good health.

Crack an Egg

Looking to improve the condition of your hair without investing in any expensive or fancy ingredients? You could just pop into your kitchen and crack open an egg instead!

Eggs are incredibly rich in protein and, given that 70% of your hair is constructed of Keratin protein, it makes logical sense that adding an egg mask to your hair will help to reverse any damage that has been caused by, or lead to, hair loss.

It may sound messy, but in reality, it's no more messy or complicated than applying shampoo. Simply whisk up an egg and spread over your hair from root to tips. Leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse.

Buy a New Hairbrush

If you’re currently brushing your hair with a tight paddle brush or skinny comb then it’s time to throw it away and start again! The way you brush your hair can actually have a big impact on the speed and severity of your hair loss.

The best brushes to prevent hair loss are surprisingly the most inexpensive on the market. Look for a plastic brush with good ventilation where the needles are relatively far apart. If you comb your hair then choose a wide tooth, rather than fine tooth, comb.

On the subject of brushing, stop brushing your hair when its wet. This is a mistake that nearly all people make, but it will increase the amount of hair you shed, and could also break and damage the hair when it is at its most fragile. Wait til your hair is completely dry before you begin brushing it.

Eat Indian Gooseberries

It’s likely that you won’t have heard of these small green berries, but Indian Gooseberries are said to have remarkable properties in reversing hair loss. That is because these miniature fruits are incredibly rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron and B vitamins, which are both essential to hair growth.

Diet plays a hugely vital role in ensuring that your hair remains strong and healthy, so if you can’t get your hands on any Indian gooseberries then you can still have a positive impact on your hair by eating a diet rich in antioxidant-containing fruits and vegetables. Broccoli, kale, and citrus fruits are all great choices.

Out in the Cold

When washing your hair, switch the temperature down to see an immediate (albeit short-term) impact on your hair. Washing your hair with cold water will increase the blood circulation to your scalp and will cause the cuticles to tighten. As a result, this will leave you with hair that will look fuller and glossier. It will also leave your hair less prone to becoming frizzy.

This is not a long-term solution and will not have a permanent impact on the strength or growth of your hair, but it will create the illusion of short-term improvement whilst you are waiting for the other techniques you try to have a more significant impact.

Go to Sleep

Finally, one of the very best (and the easiest) things that you can do for your hair is to get a good night’s sleep. Not getting enough sleep will increase your stress levels which, in turn, will weaken your immune system meaning that the functionality needed for hair growth will stop being prioritized. If you are struggling to sleep at night then you will quickly notice the impact this has on your hair: brittle, weak, and dull.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that spending the full day in bed will leave you with hair like Rapunzel: too little sleep will negatively impact your hair, rather than extra sleep causing it to grow. Aim to enjoy eight hours of sleep a night and, if you’re really struggling, don’t be afraid to visit your GP for some additional support.
